Family Guidance
What is it?
- The Family Guidance program provides professional counselling to families where there are parent/child relationship problems.
- The program is staffed by experienced Family Therapists with Masters degrees in Family Counselling.
- The purpose of the program is to help resolve family problems and restore the normal growth enhancing capabilities of the family.
Who is eligible?
- The Family Guidance Program is a special service funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development (M.C.F.D.) in the Fraser Valley Region and as such the program is only available to families referred by M.C.F.D.
- If there are parent/child problems in a family, and the family wishes to improve this relationship, they may bring it to the attention of the Social Worker and a referral can be made.
- The family need not be on an Income Security Program with Social Services.
How does the Program Work?
The counselling takes place in a number of stages and often requires the participation of the entire family.
First Stage:
The family, with the assistance of the Family Therapist, assesses the dynamics of their major problems and sets goals.
Second Stage:
The family focuses on the resolution of the identified problems, for up to ten weeks.
Third Stage: The family, with the assistance of the Family Therapist, then evaluates the progress to date and either terminates with the Family Guidance Program, or develops a new contract in conjunction with the referring Social Worker.
Once the family has completed the program, they are asked to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. Three months later they are contacted to assess the current functioning of the family and the long term impact of their involvement with the program.
