The program is a partnership between the City of Abbotsford, the District of Mission and Abbotsford Community Services. The facilities process blue bag and drop off recyclables from the City of Abbotsford and the District of Mission. These recyclables are placed onto a conveyor belt and hand sorted by Abbotsford Community Services employees into different types of materials. Once sorted, the recyclables are either baled or loaded loose into shipping containers and sent to local markets for processing. Approximately 13,000 metric tonnes of recyclables are diverted from the landfill each year.
The Abbotsford Mission Recycling Program offers an extensive public awareness program. This includes both school and community education in our newly constructed Recycling Education Centre and in the onsite Compost Demonstration Garden which was built in partnership with the Fraser Valley Regional District. The Recycling Education Program also attends many community events like Agrifair, the Berry Festival and the Mission Candlelight Parade promoting both recycling and environmental awareness.
