Special Training and Recreation Club (S.T.A.R.)

S.T.A.R. Club provides respite for families of children and teens with special needs. The program has a 2:1 staff to participant ratio so the youth gets lots of individual attention. It is one of the strengths of the program.

Our Belief

Respite care is an important family preservation and support service. It is a vital part of the continuum of family services intended to reduce family stress, support family stability and minimize the need for out of home placements.

Our Vision

We envision a respite program that provides an opportunity for children and teens with cognitive delays to participate in group social and recreational activities that will enhance and contribute to an enjoyable quality of life.

Our Goals

  • Provide a program that families feel safe, secure and comfortable with so that they are able to enjoy the respite
  • Provide a safe environment for each child/teen to develop socially
  • Encourage independence
  • Provide a positive atmosphere for children/teens to grow and play
  • Respect and accept all children/teens as unique individuals
  • Recognize the importance of peer relationships and encourage age appropriate friendships
  • Encourage physical activity and participation as a means of increasing self-confidence
  • Work together with families in a spirit of co-operation and recognize that families know best what they need

FRIDAY EVENING TEEN PROGRAM

We provide a group respite program for two groups of ten teens with cognitive delays that are 13 to 19 years of age. The program runs on alternate Friday evenings.

Service Plan:

Attend Friday evenings from 5 PM until 9 PM

Focus on social skills

Provide leisure and recreation opportunities that facilitate the development of:

  • Self-esteem
  • Social skills
  • Coping skills
  • Respite

Activities include:

  • Interactive group games
  • Swimming
  • Gym sports
  • Crafts and music
  • Food preparation and instruction
  • Community and personal safety practice

SATURDAY JUNIOR PROGRAM

We provide a group respite program for two groups of ten children with cognitive delays, ages 6 to 12 years of age. The program runs alternate Saturdays.

Service Plan:

  • Attend alternate Saturdays from 10 AM until 4 PM
  • Focus on social skills
  • Provide recreation and activities that will facilitate the development of:
  • Self-esteem 
  • Peer relationships
  • Coping skills
  • Problem solving
  • Community inclusion 
  • Leadership and independence

Activities will include:

  • Explorative play
  • Interactive group games
  • Swimming and gym activities
  • Craft activities
  • Circle time and leadership experience

SUMMER PROGRAM

All groups are entitled to one day a week for six weeks in the months of July and August
