Family Education

We provide support and education to promote change, encourage personal growth and enhance healthy families.

These programs are funded through the Ministry of Children and Family Development. All programs are offered at no cost to participants. Priority will be given to those on low income.   

Courses for Parents

Anger Awareness

This group offers tools to have anger work for us instead of against us, knowing that anger can either break or build families. Different styles of anger and personal boundaries are covered, ranging from complete passiveness to raw aggressiveness. Healthy versus harmful anger is explored through the cycle of anger along with proven effective ways to manage this strong emotion.

Triple P-The Power of Positive Parenting

These seminar sessions will be focusing on parents of children ages 6-11 who are looking for ways to provide their children a safe and interesting environment filled with positive learning opportunities and assertive discipline. Time will be allocated for brainstorming solutions to everyday parenting challenges. Parents will also look at ways to care for self during these active years.

Raising Securely Attached Children

This program is designed to equip parents with a working knowledge on how to foster secure attachment in their children. Secure attachment is vital for every child and carries with it endless benefits for both children and caregivers. This course includes a component where parents have the opportunity to practice, with their children, the skills learned.

Parent Project

This intensive parenting class covers a variety of topics geared for parents of children ages five and under. Topics covered include discipline, communication, routine, self-esteem for parent and child, ages and stages, budgeting, anger management for parent and child, nutrition and more. This course includes a component where parents have the opportunity to practice, with their children, the skills learned.

18 Sessions, Tuesdays and Thursdays

Strong Boundaries + Strong Self = Strong Mothers

This program created just for moms discusses topics such as: personal boundaries, personality traits, assertiveness and self-esteem. The group stresses the importance of caring for one’s self during the challenging years of parenting.

Maximizing the Early Years

This evening program looks at ways parents can help their children thrive by getting the most out of the infancy, toddler and pre-school years. Topics include understanding ourselves as parents and the impact we have on our family, maximizing our relationship with our children, maximizing their learning at home and in the community, and maximizing their good behaviours using effective discipline strategies.

Complimentary Services at the Family Education Program

The Children’s Place
The Children’s Place is a free childcare center for children whose parents attend any groups offered at the Family Education Program. Located next to the parents’ group room, the Children’s Place gives the children an opportunity to learn and explore under the close supervision of qualified staff in a child-centered environment. The Children’s Place offers children nutritious snacks, craft activities, story times, songs and lots of educational play.

Transportation
Transportation to and from group sessions may be available as needed. Please advise program facilitators when requiring transportation to attend groups at the Family Education Program.

Refreshments and Snacks
All group sessions offered at the Family Education Program provide healthy snacks and refreshments to both parents and children, fostering a warm and caring environment.
