Caregiver (Foster Parent) Support Program
Provides support to foster care providers and out-of-care caregivers, who are experiencing difficulty with their placements at home and/or in the community.
The goal of the program is to encourage placement stability and limit the number of placement disruptions for children and youth who are in the care of the Ministry of Childrean and Family Development (MCFD), or in an out-of-care arrangement (in the care of extended family or friends, etc.).
The program provides:
- one-to-one & group support - for caregivers to reduce conflict and increase their ability to manage challenging behaviours
- weekly support meetings - foster parents and out-of-care caregivers receive support fromthe CSP support worker
- meetings & special events - opportunities for caregivers to connect with each other and establish their own support system
Other supports include:
- attendance at care team meetings
- brainstorming ideas & helping with self-care and transition issues when necessary
- caregiver emergency support is provided via 24/7 phone after hours
- pager support
- occasional in-home support
Emergency support is reserved for overwhelmed and/or in-crisis caregivers; emergency interventions regarding "acting-out" children/youth are directed to MCFD duty workers, after-hours and/or the police.
