LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) Program
EAL Instructor
Wage: $28 per hour to start
On-Call: Monday – Friday 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM; and M, T & Th 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM
September 4th, 2019 – March 31st, 2020 with potential extension to June 2020

JOB SUMMARY

Prepare and instruct level appropriate CLB skill building language & settlement lessons to adult immigrant and refugee newcomers while increasing understanding of Canadian social, workplace and cultural practices; Create welcoming and engaging face-to- face & online classroom environments; Connect learners to the community through field trips, guest speakers, & other socio-cultural activities consistent with monthly teaching goals and overall LINC program objectives; Monitor student progress through the components of Portfolio Based Language Assessments; Provide feedback to students informally on an ongoing basis and formally through student progress reports and conferencing; Maintain student attendance records & complete monthly reporting requirements; Share resources, contribute to program curricula and plan joint activities, independently and through teacher sharing sessions.

Requirements and qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree from a recognized university
  • TESL certification from a TESL Canada recognized institute or equivalent
  • Completed CCLB CLB Bootcamp Certification
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Knowledge and/or application of Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA)
  • Knowledge of local community resources
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational & communication skills
  • Strong sense of cultural humility & understanding of the needs of adult immigrant learners

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience teaching in an adult ESL classroom
  • Experience developing, preparing and delivering student-centred and task-based lessons suitable for a multi-faceted classroom (including multi-level classes and literacy level learners)
  • Experience using digital technologies to support teaching & learning
  • Experience teaching community-based settlement English in a diverse classroom an asset

Knowledge and Skill Set

  • Knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmark competencies and associated resources
  • Knowledge and/or application of Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA)
  • Knowledge of local community resources
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational & communication skills
  • Strong sense of cultural humility & understanding of the needs of adult immigrant learners
