Volunteers Needed for Fun and Friendship
Published On January 10th 2019
Here at ACS, the Community Connections program offers several opportunities for newcomers to Canada. In addition to English conversation circles, knitting drop-ins, citizenship preparation courses and other opportunities to learn and socialize, a big part of what they do is matching new immigrants to volunteers in the area.
Volunteers with the 1-on-1 matching program help newcomers as they progress in the settlement and immigration process and learn how to navigate life in Canada and the Abbotsford community. The friendship-based matching model is informal and fun for both the volunteer and the newcomer. Take Claudia and Jen, for example. They started as a "match" when Claudia moved to Abbotsford from Colombia, and today they are close friends and even coworkers here at Abbotsford Community Services!

1-on-1 matching, while helpful for newcomers, is also rewarding for the volunteer. It's a great opportunity to learn about other countries and cultures, make new friends and be another link to our diverse community.
