Helping Newcomers Get Connected

The Multicultural Department’s Community Connections Program offers several components to support newcomers to Canada as they progress along their settlement and integration processes within their new community. Educational classes, relationship building, social activities, and community events are the integral aspects of the Connections Program.

Register for Ladies Night We're holding our seventh annual Ladies’ Night on Friday, March 8, 2019. The event brings together more than 200 immigrant and refugee women for a celebration in honour of International Women’s Day.

The one-on-one component is a friendship-based matching program designed to help newcomers link to diverse social networks in our community. While building a new friendship, Connections volunteers will help with newcomers’ priorities such as learning about Canada and the Abbotsford community, developing new social networks, obtaining services and practicing English.

If you would like to play a major role in continuing to make Abbotsford a generous and welcoming place for newcomers, this might be the program for you. Volunteers are welcome to enroll as individuals or families.

If you are a newcomer are looking to meet new people, practice speaking English and learn more about your new community of Abbotsford, Community Connections would love to meet you!

For more information on the one-on-one matching program, please contact Andrea Loewen at 604-217-3055 or

Newcomers are invited to drop in for friendship and conversation at our weekly Conversation Circles. This program is FREE. Discussions are organized around a theme, with the goal of familiarizing newcomers with Canadian culture. Volunteers are also needed to facilitate small group discussion at these weekly programs.
